What are the laws on electric scooters in the uk?
You are permitted to ride an electric scooter on private land if you have the landowner’s permission.
It Is Currently an offence to ride an electric scooter in public -including on paths, pavements and roads.
If caught riding an electric scooter without insurance you could receive a fine of £300 and six penalty points.
Riding without a licence could see you fined up to £1,000 and given points.
Electric scooters are still considered to be a motor vehicle under the 1988 traffic act.
Motor vehicles are required to have number plates, with users needing to have a driver’s licence, insurance and wear a helmet.
Will the law Change?
Here at e-scootr.co.uk we belive that now the law should change.
Electric scooters represent a great opportunity to cut emissions, and significantly reduce congestion, the direct result of taking cars off our cities roads.
A number of cities are now running trials where users can hire electric scooters, the requirements are that the user has valid car insurance and a license.
These new trials are good news for e-scooter fans, if all goes well. The government is now considering making them legal to use within the uk.
If the uk Legalises electric scooters this will bring us in line with the rest of Europe. We have all seen people scooting about whilst on holiday in the sun.
When Will E-scooters become legal in the Uk?
This is not a straightforward question, although within the next 12-18 months sounds very much like a reality!
In fact the transport committee is lobbying government to open up electric scooter use for all.
It is thought that helmets would be made mandatory if using one. Common sense you might think!
(we would highly recommend the use of protective clothing and a helmet)
E-scooters should be promoted as an alternative to short car journeys.
